Daily removal of horse activity

If you spend a long time with your horse, you have the opportunity to follow all of his/ her activities. For example,

horse show the following behaviours during grazing with other horses.Eating: Horse devote more time

toeating than to any other behavioral activity. If food is enough, horse can eat 18 hours a day.In general,

horses will spend less time grazing good quality pasture longer to meet nutritional requirements, horses on

high-quality pastures may consume forage for much longer than is necessary to meet nutritional needs.

Overgrazing canlead to horses becoming overconditioned (fat) on pasture because they are consuming more

than they need to meet their nutrient requirements. Horses do not have the ability to control their eating so

that they will stop eating when they have met their nutrient requirements. They will continue to eat, which

can lead to digestive and lameness problems.

But if the hours of food availability is low, horses mostly are seen standing, gazing around. Also some of

them show nervous behaviors such as cribbing the manger edge or lingering. Most horses do not have tendency to eat.

Sleeping: Horses can sleep both standing up and lying down. If a horse feels safe and relaxed , it sleeps 15 min a

day laying down and several hours standing.

Transactional: horses usually spend a short time for licking, playing and joking with other horses.

It should be remembered that a horse can sleep during standing but not always. But for a good and enough sleeping,

it needs to sleep in prone state on the ground, like other mammals. In such condition, they constrict their feet under

thebody and put their chain on the ground. They have shallow breathing and deepersleep during sleeping in prone

state comparing with standing state and unlike this, they have a shallow sleep in standing state. Horses are able

to sleep standing up because a "stay apparatus" in their legs allows them to relax their muscles and doze

without collapsing.

In the front legs, their equine forelimb anatomy automatically engages the stay apparatus when their muscles relax.

Horses must lie down to reach REM sleep. They only have to lie down for an hour or two every few days to meet

their minimum REM sleep requirements. However,if a horse is never allowed to lie down, after several days it

will become sleep-deprived, and in rare cases may suddenly collapse as it involuntarily slips into REM sleep while

still standing. This condition differs from narcolepsy, which horses may suffer from.

Sick horses depending on the problem they involve, may sleep more or less. The nature of a horse is like that

movement and walking are essential demands. If you monitor your horse during grazing, you will observe that the

horse do not confine to a special part, and move from one place to another one.Motion is the essential pillar

of horse health.Walking causes consumption of energy even if it is slow. If you prevent your horse from walking,

in addition to saving energy and getting fat, the horse will face limb problems, because the joints, tendons, and

ligaments do not have enough movement. In the other hand, the gut movement depends on the horse

walking rate. For this reason, horses which have enough space for walking and motion, are less affected by

colic. So, when horses are living in a small area, daily exercise should be included as an essential and important

issue. Free ranging horses generally spend about 60% of their time eating and 20% walking, while stabled horses

generally spend about 15% of time eating and 65% standing.

Clearly, there is a substantial amount of time available for domesticated horses to develop undesirable behaviors

due to coping with unsatisfied physiological or psychological needs. In such condition, they should take away to a

vast area and let them to walk freely or even ride them. Enough time for walking is different between horses. If you

do not provide this opportunity for them, their energy does not discharge, they misbehave and become angry.

Sick horses often are dull and inactive and do not desire to walk and communicate with other horses. But Sometimes

their activity becomes more than natural situation. Some horses are very dangerous during feeling pain. People

enjoy being next to horses but not alwys!Sometimes, some behaviors of horses are not pleasant for human and even

are dangerous for them. Horses, like a toddler that can't talk to us, show what is inside them with their behavior that

naturally some of these behaviors are harmful. All of a horse's behaviors have a specific reason. Understanding

what agents cause misbehaviors in horses, helps us to prevent these causing agents. When horses do not feel

good -physically or mentally- they misbehave. At the following, some reasonsof abnormal behaviors in horses

will be expressed.
